Murmurs from the next door filtered through Rebecca’s apartment wall as she walked to the window to look for Kyle’s motorcycle. Kyle’s reassuring anchor in a sea of madness, but it too was gone. An icy drift of late February snow in its place. A blizzard rolling in meant Kyle had to shelve his winter riding. He was on his way back from his motorcycle storage unit in Brooklyn.

Pools of streetlight bathed the snowy sidewalks, streets as empty as her insides. The last few weeks had been rough. Their busy schedules mixed with tussles over MOD and the wedding left Rebecca and Kyle orbiting different planets. They were so afraid of Jane coming between them that, in a way, she already had.

A cab pulled up to the curb in front of the building. The driver cruised his hand along the car to avoid slipping as he made his way around to the popped trunk to retrieve the passenger’s suitcase.

Hmmm.

Maybe all they needed was a getaway? Some alone time would help them reconnect and remember why they were a couple in the first place. Some of the spark had fled their relationship in recent weeks. With Kyle’s therapy progressing, she didn’t want to push it. But she missed the confident man who made her heart flutter.

But where to go within a blizzard? A spa? Flights to anywhere warm were grounded. She grabbed her phone to thumb through options. If they could get someplace warmer… Hard to have mad sex when they were never in the same room, and when they were, Jane’s phantom peeked over their shoulders.

Kyle’s key slid the door. She looked back outside, but all was still empty.

Back entrance.

“Holy shit, it’s freezing.” He stomped clumps of snow off his boots. “Remind me to find a closer garage. I’ve been in the Uber for half an hour and am still frozen.”

Kyle’s normally olive skin tinged blue as he shrugged off his jacket. Rebecca rubbed her hands up and down his arms to create warming friction. “Your furnace needs a boost.”

He pecked her forehead. “Maybe a hot shower will help.”

Chill vented off his clothes as he passed, sending a shiver through her as she stood, anchored in place, staring at the closed bathroom door.

A shiver. A shiver where a tingle should be.

Perhaps that was harsh, but compared to when they were first dating, there was a definite drop in the excitement department. Back then, every Kyle entrance was an event. He’d double-ring the doorbell, then swoop in, embracing Rebecca before tipping her back into a dramatic dip.

Kissing her.

Wiggling his eyebrows.

Either that or pop over from his apartment across the hall to steal a kiss while throwing out the trash.

Or leave notes on her door.

Or summon her over to his apartment simply to hand her a single rose. He’d flash an impish smile before playfully closing the door in her face, only to watch her reaction through the peephole.

That was then.

Now, she got a forehead peck.

Yeah, they definitely needed a getaway. It’d do them both good.
